Hard Red Spring Wheat (Triticum aestivum )
Crop Information
Description:

This is the wheat class Canada is famous for. The term "hard' refers to kernel texture. Hard wheats usually (but not necessarily) have a vitreous endosperm. The top grades of Canadian Western Red Spring (1CWRS and 2CWRS) wheats are characterized by hard texture, high protein and high gluten content. CWRS wheat is purchased by 0.1 % units of protein. This is the wheat that the lightest, most moist, high rise loafs of bread are made from.

About half of the acres sown to Canada Western Red Spring type cultivars are located in the brown and dark brown soils. The probability of obtaining top grades of CWRS is highest in these types of soils and weather conditions. As long as there is a market demand for top grades of CWRS wheat and a price premium for number 1 CWRS over other classes of wheat, then CWRS wheat cultivars will be produced in the brown and dark brown soils zones.

Remarks: AC Abbey, AC Eatonia  and Lillian - adapted to sawfly areas. AC Abbey has semi-dwarf stature.  Varieties having a rating of fair (F) or  poor (P) to loose smut or bunt  require a systemic fungicide seed treatment.  C.W. Red Spring Wheat grown under irrigation tends to have lower grades.  Alikat - special adaptation to acid soils. CDC Imagine and CDC Abound are Clearfield tolerant.  BW365, BW388, BW859, BW867 and Unity VB, insufficient data to describe.
