Originally the mascot for Project Barley and Ropin' the Web (both branding predecessors to) the Agriculture and Forestry website, Duke is a fine hybrid of a character. The Duke and his grin -- ears and awns blowing in the wind as he races across the surf -- is a cross between a superlative barley variety and a world champion surfer.
Our mascot's name is inspired by Duke the barley variety and the legendary Duke Kahanomoko, an early 20th century world class surfer. Just as Duke K. was an ambassador for surfing, around the world; our Duke is an ambassador for Alberta Agriculture as the ministry takes to the electronic waves of the internet.
Thousands of people have contacted the Duke since we turned on the site in June of 1995. If you have a question or a comment, why don't you drop a note to the Duke at Ag Info Centre.
